Despite the fact that the accepted “formula” has not been made workable, observers continue to try to make it fit. One author lists a variety of budget categories for a low-income family, concluding that there is not enough left for food and housing. The paper argues that those living financially marginal lifestyles are better qualified to define budget categories and priorities, and concludes that we often take the same skewed approach to discussing race and gender as well.
